In 1874, the ship Surat sank in New Zealand without losing anyone aboard. A ship sharing our city's name left a story on the other side of the world. 1. Gravesend, England. Surat departed on 28 September 1873, bound for Dunedin.
2. Surat Bay, New Zealand. The ship was wrecked on 1 January 1874. Everyone aboard survived, and the bay took its name.
3. Port Chalmers. The French warship Vire sailed from here to collect the stranded passengers.
4. Dunedin. The city council later paid for the passengers' auctioned luggage and returned it.
5. Toitu Otago Settlers Museum. The ship's figurehead was donated in 1924, 50 years after the wreck. These are modern photographs of the actual locations, not pictures of the 1874 disaster. The museum photo shows the exterior, not the figurehead. Tag a Surti who would want to know this story. Which place would you visit to follow it?
