Is RTE admission truly reaching the children who need it the most?
Under the Right to Education (RTE) framework, 25% of seats in certain private schools are reserved for children from economically weaker and disadvantaged sections. However, questions are being raised about how a family’s financial eligibility is verified during the admission process.
Concerns include cases where the income declared through an income certificate may differ from other financial records such as Income Tax Returns (ITR). This raises an important question: should available financial records be cross-verified during RTE eligibility checks?
Another concern is whether annual family income alone is enough to determine a family’s actual economic condition. Two families with similar incomes may have very different levels of property, savings, business ownership or other assets.
The larger question remains: how can the RTE admission process ensure that its benefits reach genuinely deserving children while maintaining fairness, transparency and accountability?
