What Kind of Future Are We Choosing?
College elections are meant to be about ideas. They are supposed to be about representation, leadership, student issues, and the kind of campus students want to build.
But look around. Roads covered with election pamphlets. Pieces of paper scattered across public spaces. And while those campaigning for leadership move on to their next rally, someone else is left to clean up the mess.
What makes the picture even more uncomfortable is seeing young children picking up the waste that their adults have left behind. They are cleaning the roads.
And that raises a simple question:
What kind of future are we actually choosing?
A student election is not only about putting a name on a ballot. It is also an opportunity to ask what kind of leadership we want to see.
Campaigning is a part of democracy, but responsibility should be a part of leadership too.
If a campaign for a better future leaves today’s roads dirtier, perhaps we should pause and think about what that future is supposed to look like.
And for every student casting a vote, this is not a message to tell you whom to choose.
It is a reminder to choose thoughtfully.
Because leadership is not just about how loudly someone asks for your vote. It is also about what they leave behind after they are done asking for it.
Today, some children are cleaning the mess created by an election campaign. Tomorrow, it will be students living with the consequences of the choices made today.
Because the future you choose should be one that doesn’t leave someone else cleaning up after it.
Choose wisely. Think beyond the election.
