![Mumbai has always been a city shaped by people from different parts of the world.
From the Chinese community in Mazagaon to the Baghdadi Jewish community in Fort and the Scottish congregation that established its church here, traces of these communities still remain across the city.
Sometimes, you don’t need to go far to find Mumbai’s history.
You just need to know where to look.

![Mumbai is growing. But are we making the city better or simply making it bigger?
The numbers are worth thinking about:
• Only 3.7% of Mumbai is accessible open space
• The city has just 1.8 sq m of green cover per person, compared with the 10 to 12 sq m benchmark in urban planning guidelines
• Mumbai’s vegetation cover fell from 46.42% in 1988 to 26.67% in 2018
• Built up areas can experience temperatures 5 to 6°C higher than well shaded areas
More construction means more pressure on roads, drainage, water, open spaces and the city’s natural ability to handle heat and heavy rain. BMC’s own Climate Action Plan recognises the need for more green and permeable spaces to reduce heat and flood risk.
Mumbai absolutely needs development.
But development shouldn’t only be about adding more buildings.
Maybe the real question is not how much more Mumbai can build, but how much better Mumbai can become.

![Sanjay Dutt has clarified his controversial “can’t feel that peace in India” remark after it sparked backlash online. The actor said the comments were part of a scripted and light hearted conversation on Shekhar Suman’s show and were never intended to hurt or disrespect anyone.
Dutt said the conversation was presented in the spirit of his Munna Bhai films and the idea of “Gandhigiri” which he said was meant to convey love, togetherness and goodwill.

![Ever wondered why Mumbai has so many places ending with “Naka”?
The word comes from Marathi and can refer to a road junction, a checkpoint or a place where roads meet. Over time, Mumbai’s nakas became important meeting points for traffic, transport, trade and even daily wage workers.
From Saki Naka and Marol Naka to the old octroi check nakas, the word has become deeply woven into Mumbai’s geography and everyday language.
Now you know what that “Naka” actually means.
