Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has proposed a financial protection measure for women abandoned by husbands without legal separation. Under the proposal, 20% of a government employee’s salary could be deducted and deposited into his first wife’s bank account if he enters an informal marriage with another woman.
The initiative aims to safeguard women’s dignity and financial security, while similar protection for private-sector employees is also being considered.
