Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Flydubai Captain Smit Machchhar over a video call on Friday, praising the Indian pilot for his courage, presence of mind and composure during the mid-air crisis.
Machchhar was injured two days earlier after reportedly being stabbed by his co-pilot aboard a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
During the emotional conversation, Machchhar told PM Modi that he was his “biggest idol” and said receiving the call was a deeply special moment for him.
The pilot also revealed that he recites the Hanuman Chalisa whenever he finds himself in difficult situations — and that he was reciting it while facing the crisis aboard the flight.
Machchhar became emotional while speaking to the Prime Minister, saying he felt extremely proud and had never imagined he would get an opportunity to speak with him.
PM Modi told him that the entire country was praying for his recovery and praised his bravery during the crisis.
